“Actors aren’t just loved here in Hollywood, they’re loved the world over, because they’re recognisable,” he said. “You can be in the Third World, and you get a glimpse of a Hollywood star, and it makes you feel better. You can be a little child, a little Asian child, with no possessions, no money - but you see a picture of Angelina Jolie and you think, ‘Mummy!’”
Not even legendary personalities were immune to Gervais’ barbs. While introducing fellow countryman Paul McCartney, Gervais said that the former Beatle had flown to Los Angeles in economy class.
“He’s saving money. He spent a lot last year,” Gervais said of the musician who recently went through an expensive divorce from Heather Mills.
“One thing that can’t be bought is a Golden Globe,” he said to gales of laughter, acceding that he was probably going a bit too far. “I’m not going to do this again, anyway.”
“I will be making the most of this,” he said of his hosting gig. “I’m not used to these viewing figures — let’s face it, nor is NBC.”
“They can’t censor me. It’s live. That’s the beauty of it,” he said. “When they offered me the job, I said, ‘Can I say what I want?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ I’m not going to rehearse; they haven’t seen the script. They can’t censor me. I suppose they could stop the show and replace me.”
“It’s not my fault. I like a drink as much as the next man,” Gervais said. “Unless the next man is Mel Gibson” — a reference to the actor’s notorious DUI in which he went on a anti-semetic rant.
Bonus quote from 2009 Golden Globes:
Last year, while presenting a Golden Globe to Kate Winslet, the British comedian made a joke about the holocaust. In reference to a joke from his TV show “Extras,” he said, “What did I tell you, Winslet - do a Holocaust movie, win an award.”
